Allen Meadows: "I have said this before, but I will say it again: no one makes better wine in the Mâconnais than Barraud. There are a few domaines that produce wines that are sometimes just as good, ... but none of them surpasses the quality he consistently produces. If you aren’t familiar with the wines, you owe it to yourself and your pocketbook to check them out."
Nestled among the grandeur of the Solutré and Vergisson cliffs, Domaine Barraud finds its home in the limestone-rich valley of Vergisson, in Macon. The unique soils, a blend of limestone scree, fossilized limestone, and varied clays, impart a distinct character to each wine they produce. The family's commitment to showcasing these individual terroirs shines in each bottle.
Founded in 1905 by Jean-Marie Barraud, this winery has a rich history. By the 1930s, they were making their name by bottling their own wines, including the notable 'Les Crays' vineyard, which was introduced in 1947. Fast forward to the 1970s, and their wines were getting global attention for their quality and value, especially when compared to other white Burgundies.
Daniel Barraud, the fourth-generation winemaker, and his wife, Martine, have been central to the winery's success. Their son, Julien, joined the team in 2006, bringing fresh energy and forward thinking. (Family photo above)
The vineyards thrive under bio-dynamic principles, the method they believe as the best to produce their wine. In 2022 they will proudly be organic certified and practicing bio-dynamic principals. Each vine is nurtured to yield the finest grapes, which are then hand-harvested at the peak of ripeness. The estate's gentle pressing and meticulous fermentation process, using indigenous yeasts, further ensures the vineyard and lieux-dit expressions are preserved.
Upon harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed, retaining their clusters. The juice then rests overnight in temperature-regulated tanks to settle. A gravity transfer is used to move the juice to French oak barrels (20% of which are new) for both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. After a year or so (depending on the specific cuvée), the wines are carefully racked and given an additional two months in tank. Their adherence to bio-dynamics drives their decision to only bottle during a waning moon in accordance with Maria Thun's research. The wine is then bottled with no fining or filtering.
The 2021 vintage from Domaine Barraud is the perfect representation of the family, their love for the land, and their passion for crafting impeccable wines. Salut!

This was always known here as La Verchère. They wanted to keep the original Verchère identity - so they've added the sobriquet. This is the parcel in front of the house, a lovely gentle slope, always looking impeccable. Lovely. Broad and bright. Really charming and expansive texture. This is always a winner here and so it is great this now has the recognition it deserves with 1er Cru status." L&S

The palate is fresh and saline, with lovely focus and tension. Precise with a touch of spice on the aftertaste. Classy and utterly delicious." VM
Pouilly-Fuisse 1er Cru 2021 - Retail: $84.99 - Your Price: $69.99 - In cases of 6, minimum 2 bottles - 7 cases available 93 Allen Meadows "Pungent aromas of wood toast and reduction introduce very rich and generously proportioned medium-bodied flavors that possess a seductive texture that carries over to the detailed, moderately austere and compact finale. There is almost painful intensity to the borderline aggressively mineral-driven flavors that conclude in a youthfully austere, chiseled and very dry finale. This is quite good and very promising though note that it's going to require at least some patience" BH
**Pouilly-Fuisse 1er Cru 'Sur La Roche' 2021 - Retail: $94.99 - Your Price: $79.99 - In cases of 6, minimum 2 bottles - 5 cases available 92 Vinous "The 2021 Pouilly-Fuisse La Roche 1er Cru has superb tension and sense of energy on the nose. It is more terroir-driven that the pervious vintage tasted alongside. The palate is vibrant and fresh with life cordial and citrus peel, tensile, maybe not presistent yet beautifully defined with a persistent malic aftertaste." VM
Pouilly-Fuisse 'En Buland' 2021 - Retail: $102.99 - Your Price: $84.99 - In cases of 6, minimum 2 bottles - 3 cases available 94 Allen Meadows, 93Tim Atkin "Slightly more prominent wood frames aromas of ripe apple, fennel, wet stone and a plethora of citrus elements. The rich, concentrated and impressively scaled big-bodied flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also buffers the firm acid spine shaping the bitter lemon zest and beautifully long if youthfully austere finish. En Buland always ages well, and the 2021 version should be no exception." BH
